Event Schedule 2008 - Greek Heritage Month May 26 – June 22, 2008 Monday, May 26th - Illustrated Lecture by Professor Hector Williams 8:00 PM – Hellenic Centre (Upstairs Hall) 4500 Arbutus Street, Vancouver “Greeks on the Nile: 3,500 years of Greco-Egyptian History” Presented by PHAROS – Canadian-Hellenic Cultural Society Admission – Free Saturday May 31st - Ancient Greek Play: “Socrates on Trial” May 31st thru June 3rd 6:30 PM June 5th thru June 7th 8:00 PM Telus Theatre in the UBC Chan Centre 6265 Crescent Road, UBC An adaptation of Aristophanes’ slapstick comedy Clouds and several of Plato’s dramatic dialogues, it tells the story of the trial and death of the famous philosopher, but in a contemporary context, asking whether Socrates deserved to be executed. Georgia St, Vancouver Bring the family to explore Greek culture in a fun and interactive way at library square. The kids can enjoy face painting, an arts and crafts area, Greek mythology story telling and lessons in learning to write their names in Greek. Everyone else can enjoy the live Greek dancing performances, musical performances, handcraft area, herb and medicinal display, Greek food display presented by Krinos Foods, backgammon lessons and demonstrations, slide show of Greece and much more. Wednesday June 4th Greek Film - False Alarm “Ores Kinis Isyhias” 89 minutes - Parental Guidance. Course language. 7:00 PM – 5th Avenue Cinemas – 2110 Burrard Street Vancouver In Greek with English Subtitles Residents of a building in Athens are slowly driven mad by a car alarm that blares intermittently through the day and night. As evening falls, Andreas loudly tries to woo back wife Eleni; actor Fanis longs to rekindle his secret gay relationship with Marios; and sisters Loukia and Niki bicker through their insecurities. Next door, Irene is robbed by Nicholas and Dinos. Behind all the shutters, no one is happy and few are true to themselves. Admission - $8 Monday June 9th - Greek Film – Brides “Nifes” 123 minutes - Parental Guidance. Course language, nudity, violence. 7:00 PM - 5th Avenue Cinemas – 2110 Burrard Street Vancouver In English/ Greek with subtitles. Vancouver’s own Terry Dougas, Co- Producer of Nifes, will be at the Vancouver screening. The Hellenic Canadian Congress of BC thank him for his assistance, for without his help, this film would not have been shown at our festival. Set in 1922, it is the story of a mail order bride, one of 700, aboard the SS King Alexander, who falls in love with an American photographer. She is bound for her new husband, in New York; he is on his way home to a failed marriage. Admission - $8 Wednesday June 11th - Lecture by Dr. Andre Gerolymatos 8:00 PM - Hellenic Centre (Upstairs Hall) 4500 Arbutus Street, Vancouver “Kosovo & the Balkans: Past, Present and Future”. Dr. Andre Gerolymatos is the Chair of Hellenic Studies at SFU. Presented by PHAROS – Canadian-Hellenic Cultural Society Admission Free Saturday June 21st - W.
